Extraordinary steps: What's unique about falls and falls prevention in advanced dementia (Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, 246 Bloor St. W., Room SK 422)

Falls and their sequelae are a major contributor to loss of independence and function in older adults in the advanced stages of dementia. Most falls prevention approaches have not been evaluated in this particular population, and may have unintended consequences. In this presentation, Dr. Iaboni will present a multidimensional and dynamic framework for understanding why people with advanced dementia fall, and discuss approaches aimed at resolving the tension between striving for safety and preserving freedom of action and dignity.
